Specialized Care to Help You Manage Tics with Confidence and Understanding
At Lotus Behavioral Health Services, we provide expert, compassionate care for children, teens, and adults living with Tourette’s Syndrome and other tic disorders. These conditions can impact self-esteem, school or work performance, and social interactions—but with the right support, individuals can learn to manage tics and thrive in all areas of life.
What Are Tic Disorders?
Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or vocal sounds that are difficult to control. They can be simple (like blinking or throat clearing) or complex (involving coordinated movements or phrases). Tic disorders include:
- Provisional Tic Disorder (lasting less than a year)
- Chronic Motor or Vocal Tic Disorder (lasting more than a year)
- Tourette’s Syndrome, which includes both motor and vocal tics lasting more than a year
Tics often begin in childhood, usually between the ages of 5 and 10, and can vary in frequency and intensity. While some individuals outgrow them, others may continue to experience tics into adulthood. Tics can worsen with stress, excitement, or fatigue and may co-occur with conditions like ADHD, OCD, anxiety, or learning difficulties.
How We Help
Our approach is comprehensive, respectful, and tailored to each individual. We focus on helping clients understand their tics, reduce their impact, and build coping strategies that enhance confidence and independence.
Behavioral Therapy
We use evidence-based treatments like:
- CBIT (Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics): A leading behavioral therapy that helps individuals recognize the urge before a tic and replace it with a more manageable action
- Habit Reversal Training (HRT): A core component of CBIT that supports awareness and control
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): For co-occurring anxiety, stress, or emotional challenges
- Parent education and coaching: To help families support children with understanding and structure
We also provide psychoeducation to reduce stigma, improve self-awareness, and empower clients to talk openly about their experience.
Medication Management
For individuals with moderate to severe tics that interfere with daily life, medication may be considered. Our psychiatric providers offer careful evaluation and ongoing support to determine if medications are appropriate and to ensure they’re used safely and effectively alongside therapy.
Telehealth That’s Convenient and Comfortable
All our services are delivered via secure telehealth, giving clients access to high-quality care from the comfort of home. This is especially helpful for children and teens who feel more at ease in familiar environments.
